We were formally established as a registered not for profit entity in 2024 after a period of consultations with various actors in African governance, development, democracy, and security on the gaps which such an organisation might fill in the ongoing quest for the Africa we want.

We produce policy reports,

convene high level policy dialogues,

issue publications on topical issues relevant to the leadership-policy interface in Africa.

Who is behind Amandla Institute?

Our founders are Dr Fayemi and Ms. Adeleye Fayemi.

Dr. Fayemi and Ms Adeleye Fayemi bring their years of experience to bear. They are supported by a Board of Trustees, a Governing Board and a Management and Programme Team.

Dr. J. Kayode Fayemi, CON, is the former Governor of Ekiti State in southwest Nigeria, former Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and presently President of the pan-African forum of sub-national leaders known as the Forum of Regions of Africa (FORAF).

He holds a PhD in War Studies from King’s College London in the UK where he is also presently a Visiting Professor. Political activist, civil society leader, institution builder, scholar, administrator, and public intellectual, Dr. Fayemi brings his years of experience in governance, development, security, and democracy building to guide the work of the Institute and establish it as a foremost pan-African resource available to leaders and citizens alike.

Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi is a Gender and Development Practitioner Feminist Activist, Policy Advocate, Leadership Coach, Philanthropist, Image Management Specialist and Writer. She has a BA (1984) and MA (1988) in History from the University of Ife, Nigeria (now Obafemi Awolowo University).

She also received an MA in Gender and Society (1992) from Middlesex University, UK

She served as the Director of Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMWA), an international development organisation for African women based in London, UK, with an Africa regional office in Kampala, Uganda, from 1991-2001.

While she was the Director of AMWA, she established the African Women’s Leadership Institute (AWLT), a training, capacity building and networking forum for young African women which has produced well over 6,000 women leaders across Africa.

She co-founded the African Women’s Development Fund, (AWDF) and served as the first CEO from 2001-2010.

She was a United Nations Women Nigeria Senior Advisor (2017-2018) and is currently a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Africa Leadership Center King’s College, London. As First Lady of Ekiti State, Nigeria (2010-2014 and 2018-2022), she used her platform to influence legal and policy frameworks and to mobilise resources from a wide range of stakeholders, for the promotion and protection of the rights of women and girls.

She serves on several boards such as the African Women’s Leadership Network, African Women’s Development Fund, and she is a member of the Wormer’s Leadership Board at the Women and Public Policy Program at the Harvard Kennedy School.

We are headquartered in Abuja, the Nigerian federal capital.
